Day 1
Fly to Afar & Enter the Danakil Depression
Fly from Addis Ababa to Semera in the morning and begin the overland journey into the dramatic Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and lowest places on Earth. Drive across vast desert landscapes to reach the surreal salt flats, where shimmering salt lakes stretch endlessly under the intense Afar sun. Witness local Afar workers extracting salt by hand, giving you a raw and authentic introduction to life in this extreme environment. Over night stay in campaign
Day 2
Volcano, Lava & Alien Landscapes
Travel deeper into the Danakil to reach Erta Ale, one of the few active volcanoes in the world with a persistent lava lake, and hike to the crater at sunset or night. Stand at the edge of the glowing lava lake, experiencing one of Earth’s most powerful natural phenomena in complete isolation. Earlier or later in the day, explore Dallol’s otherworldly sulfur springs, vivid mineral formations, and acidic pools that create one of the most surreal landscapes on the planet. Over night stay in campaign.
DAY 3
Sunrise, Culture & Return
Wake early to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the salt flats near Hamedela, where the colors of the desert shift dramatically with the rising light. Visit nearby Afar villages to observe traditional lifestyles before beginning the drive back across the desert to Semera. Catch your return flight to Addis Ababa, concluding an intense and unforgettable journey through one of the most extreme environments on Earth.
