Where Endemic Birds Meet Ethiopia's Wildest Landscapes.
Ethiopia Birdwatching Tour
The Experience
Spend 8 days birdwatching across Ethiopia's highlands, wetlands, and wildlife habitats, searching for endemic species, raptors, waterbirds, and diverse native birdlife with expert local guides.
✦ Expert Field Note
"Ethiopia rewards birders who slow down. Instead of chasing a long checklist from one location to another, this itinerary combines different habitats and gives you time in the field, when changing light, weather, and bird activity can make the difference between seeing a species and missing it."
Day by Day Plan
Day 1 — Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa Birding & Highland Introduction
Begin with a relaxed birding session around Addis Ababa and the surrounding highlands. Depending on arrival time, explore suitable areas around Entoto and Sululta, where open grassland, eucalyptus woodland, and cultivated landscapes can produce a varied selection of highland birds. Meet your local birding guide and review the plan for the days ahead.

Day 2 — Addis Ababa → Sululta → Lake Ziway
Highland Birds to Rift Valley Wetlands
Start early for the best bird activity and travel toward the Rift Valley. Stop at suitable birding sites around Sululta before continuing toward Lake Ziway. The change in altitude and habitat brings new species and a different birding environment. Spend the afternoon around the lake and nearby wetlands, watching for waterbirds, raptors, and other species attracted to the shoreline.

Day 3 — Lake Ziway → Awash
Rift Valley Birding & Awash Landscapes
Continue east toward Awash, stopping at suitable habitats along the route. As the landscape becomes warmer and drier, the birdlife changes with it. Enter the Awash area and spend the afternoon birding around accessible woodland, open country, and water sources. Keep the pace flexible so the guide can take advantage of active birding locations.

Day 4 — Awash National Park
Woodland, River & Savanna Birding
Begin before sunrise and spend the cooler morning hours birding in Awash National Park. Explore suitable habitats around woodland, grassland, riverine areas, and water sources. The focus is on habitat diversity rather than a guaranteed species list, with opportunities for raptors, colorful woodland birds, and other East African species. Rest during the hotter part of the day before an afternoon session.

Day 5 — Awash → Addis Ababa → Bale Mountains
From Rift Valley Heat to Bale Highlands
Travel back toward Addis Ababa and continue south toward the Bale Mountains. This is primarily a travel and habitat-transition day, with opportunities for roadside birding where conditions allow. As you climb toward the Bale highlands, temperatures become cooler and the vegetation changes significantly.

Day 6 — Bale Mountains
Highland Endemics & Forest Birding
Spend the day exploring selected habitats in the Bale Mountains. Depending on the route and current conditions, birding can include highland forest, moorland, and open mountain environments. The guide will focus on endemic and range-restricted species as well as the wider bird community. Early starts are important, particularly at altitude when bird activity is strongest.

Day 7 — Sanetti Plateau
Afro-Alpine Birding Above 4,000 Metres
Head into the Sanetti Plateau for a full day of high-altitude birding. The open Afro-alpine environment is dramatically different from the forests and wetlands visited earlier in the trip. Birding at this elevation can be physically demanding, so the day is paced according to altitude, weather, and your comfort. Keep an eye on the surrounding landscape for wildlife between birding stops.

Day 8 — Bale Mountains → Addis Ababa
Final Birding Session & Return to Addis
Use the morning for one final birding session around the Bale highlands before beginning the return journey to Addis Ababa. Depending on the departure schedule, make selected stops along the route for last sightings and photographs. Arrive in Addis Ababa for your onward flight, hotel transfer, or final arrangements.
