"

✦ Expert Field Note

"Ethiopian coffee is not simply something you drink—it is a social ritual. The best experience is to slow down and understand the ceremony: roasting the beans, grinding them by hand, preparing the buna, and sharing the three traditional rounds with your host."

Day by Day Plan

1

Hour 1 — Addis Ababa

Meet Your Local Host & Discover Ethiopian Coffee

Meet your guide and host in Addis Ababa and begin with the story of Ethiopia's coffee culture. Learn about coffee-growing regions, traditional preparation, and the role of coffee in everyday Ethiopian social life. Your host introduces the beans and explains what to look for during roasting and tasting.

Learning why coffee is called buna and why it holds such an important place in Ethiopian culture.

2

Hour 2 — Coffee Ceremony

Traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony

Watch the traditional preparation from start to finish. Fresh green coffee beans are washed, roasted, cooled, and ground before being brewed in a jebena. The process is deliberately unhurried, giving you time to observe, ask questions, and experience the ceremony rather than simply drinking a cup of coffee.

Watching freshly roasted beans transform into your first cup of Ethiopian buna.

3

Hour 3 — Tasting & Three Traditional Rounds

Taste Buna the Ethiopian Way

Take part in the traditional coffee service and experience the three commonly served rounds: Abol, Tona, and Baraka. Taste the changes in strength and character as the ceremony continues, accompanied by traditional snacks when available. Your guide can explain local customs and etiquette as you enjoy the experience.

Sharing the final round, Baraka, traditionally associated with blessing.

4

Hour 4 — Coffee Culture & Local Conversation

From Coffee Ceremony to Ethiopian Daily Life

Finish by connecting the ceremony to modern Ethiopian coffee culture. Discuss coffee-growing regions, local roasting traditions, cafés, and how coffee moves from Ethiopian farms to cups around the world. Your guide can also recommend local coffee experiences or places to visit during the rest of your stay in Addis Ababa.

Leaving with a deeper understanding of why coffee is part of Ethiopian hospitality—not simply a beverage.
