A 15-day photography expedition across Ethiopia’s most distinctive landscapes, wildlife habitats, volcanic terrain, and cultural regions—from geladas and Ethiopian wolves in the highlands to Dallol, Erta Ale, and the portrait traditions of the Omo Valley.

Day by Day Plan
Day 1 — Addis Ababa
Arrival, Camera Check & Addis Ababa Introduction
Arrive in Addis Ababa and settle into your hotel. After time to rest and adjust to the city's elevation of about 2,350 metres, meet your photography guide for a trip briefing and equipment check. If arrival time allows, take a gentle evening drive for your first opportunities to photograph Addis Ababa's streets, people, and changing evening light.

Day 2 — Addis Ababa → Gondar → Simien Mountains
Into the Simien Highlands
Take a domestic flight toward Gondar before continuing by road into the Simien Mountains. The landscape changes dramatically as you climb toward the escarpment. Use the afternoon for your first landscape and wildlife photography session, with opportunities to photograph gelada troops in their natural highland habitat. At altitude, the air is cooler and evenings can be cold, so warm layers are important.

Day 3 — Simien Mountains
Geladas, Escarpments & Morning Light
Start early when the light is softer and wildlife activity is often more rewarding. Spend the morning around the Simien escarpment photographing geladas and wide mountain landscapes. Depending on conditions and the group's interests, continue toward viewpoints around the park for layered compositions of cliffs, valleys, and highland scenery. The afternoon allows time to review images, rest, and prepare for another golden-hour session.

Day 4 — Simien Mountains → Gondar → Addis Ababa
Final Simien Light & Return to Addis
Use the morning for one final photography session before descending toward Gondar. The descent provides a noticeable change in temperature and landscape. Continue to Gondar for your domestic flight back to Addis Ababa. Keep the afternoon flexible for rest and preparation for the next major environment: the high-altitude Bale Mountains.

Day 5 — Addis Ababa → Bale Mountains
Into Ethiopia's Afro-Alpine Highlands
Travel toward the Bale Mountains and settle into the highland environment. The landscape becomes increasingly open and alpine as you approach the Sanetti Plateau. Use the afternoon for a scouting drive and photography session, looking for the distinctive vegetation, raptors, and other high-altitude wildlife of the area. Temperatures can drop sharply after sunset, particularly at altitude.

Day 6 — Sanetti Plateau
Ethiopian Wolf & Afro-Alpine Wildlife
Begin before sunrise and spend the best part of the day exploring the Sanetti Plateau with your local guide. The primary photographic target is the Ethiopian wolf, but sightings are never guaranteed, so the day is also designed around the plateau's dramatic scenery, endemic wildlife, birds of prey, and changing mountain light. At more than 4,000 metres in places, take the altitude seriously and allow your body time to adjust.

Day 7 — Bale Mountains → Addis Ababa
Highland Morning & Transition to Afar
Take advantage of the morning for a final Bale Mountains photography session before beginning the journey back toward Addis Ababa. After returning to the capital, prepare for a completely different environment: the extreme heat and volcanic landscapes of the Danakil Depression. Pack light for the desert section and keep essential camera equipment protected from dust and heat.

Day 8 — Addis Ababa → Semera → Erta Ale
Into the Danakil — Volcanoes After Dark
Travel toward the Afar region and continue by 4WD into the Danakil Depression. The landscape becomes increasingly arid and remote as you leave the main roads. Continue toward Erta Ale and, depending on current volcanic conditions and access, make the demanding ascent toward the volcano after the worst daytime heat has passed. This is one of the expedition's most physically demanding sections.

Day 9 — Erta Ale → Dallol Region
Volcano Sunrise & Dallol's Mineral Landscapes
After the night at Erta Ale, descend and continue deeper into the Danakil Depression. Travel toward the Dallol area, where mineral deposits, salt formations, acidic pools, and hydrothermal features create an exceptionally graphic landscape. Photography here depends heavily on current access, volcanic conditions, and the day's heat. The schedule is deliberately built around cooler hours whenever possible.

Day 10 — Dallol → Lake Assal Region → Semera
Salt Flats, Afar Landscapes & Return
Continue photographing the stark landscapes around the salt flats and Afar lowlands before beginning the long return toward Semera. This is a demanding travel day, with significant road time and extreme temperatures depending on the season. Your guide will manage the route according to road and weather conditions rather than rushing to a fixed photographic schedule

Day 11 — Semera → Addis Ababa → Jinka
From the Danakil to the Omo Valley
Return by air toward Addis Ababa and continue by domestic flight toward Jinka, the main gateway for exploring the southern Omo Valley. The change is dramatic: from the mineral deserts of Afar to warmer lowland landscapes and communities with distinct cultural traditions. Use the remaining time for a relaxed local photography session and preparation for the next few days.

Day 12 — Jinka → Mursi Area
Mursi Portraits & Southern Omo Landscapes
Travel with your local guide toward the Mursi area. The focus is on respectful documentary photography rather than simply collecting portraits. Your guide helps explain local customs, photography etiquette, and when permission is required. Allow time to photograph the surrounding landscape as well as people and daily activities, giving the experience more depth than a quick village visit.

Day 13 — Omo Valley
Hamer Culture & Documentary Photography
Continue deeper into the Omo Valley toward Hamer communities. Photograph daily life, clothing, landscapes, livestock, and traditional activities where access and permission allow. The exact cultural experiences available depend on local circumstances and the community calendar, so the day is kept flexible rather than promising a staged event.

Day 14 — Omo Valley
Final Omo Photography Session
Use the final full day in the Omo Valley to slow down and photograph with intention. Rather than moving constantly between locations, the day can be adapted around the strongest available photographic opportunities, local activities, light, and your interests. This is also an opportunity to revisit a subject or community when conditions are better instead of treating the itinerary as a checklist.

Day 15 — Omo Valley → Addis Ababa
Final Frames & Departure
Take a final morning photography session before traveling to the regional airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa, subject to the confirmed flight schedule. On arrival, use any available time for a final meal, coffee, shopping, or image review before your onward departure. For international flights, the exact timing should be coordinated around the confirmed domestic connection.
